The Kégresse track design standardized in 1940 and was widely used for armored personnel carriers, mortar carriers, anti-aircraft guns, anti-tank guns, artillery tractors and armored fighting vehicles, especially by the Germans and Americans. Regular wheels on the front and caterpillar tracks on the back gave this vehicle the cross-country capabilities of a tank and the handling of a wheeled vehicle. The rear compartment of each model was encapsulated with face-hardened armor plate, which provided little protection above the level of the rifleman's individual weapon.
