From the manufacturer:
The United State's first strike-fi9ghter, the F-18 "Hornet" was conceived and designed specifically for the traditional strike applications without compromising its fighter capabilities. Configured for either a single or double-crew cockpit, this twin engine, mid-wing aircraft operates equally well from both carriers and airfields. It's twin F404-GE-402 enhanced performance turbofan engines deliver a combination 36,000 pounds of thrust and can surpass speeds of Mach 1.8. The ease with which the Hornet can be converted from fighter to strike mode and back again has also made the Hornet enduringly popular among pilots and operational commanders. And throughout Operation Desert Storm in 1991, Hornets routinely performed fighter and strike missions on the same sortie. Because it can fill such a variety of roles–air superiority, fighter escort, air defense suppression, reconnaissance, forward air control, close air support and night strike missions–the F-18 has proven to be the most versatile combat aircraft currently in service. As the "weapon" of choice for the U.S. Navy, it has also become the "demonstrator" of choice for the U.S. Navy's famed Blue Angels Flight Demonstration Squadron.
